D2DH - photos and wrap up - Part 1 Days 1..3 Bideford to Bath

D2DH - photos and wrap up.

Between Monday 11th September 2018 and Sunday 16th 2018 Clive cycled from Bideford in North Devon over to Dad's house in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Staying in AirB&B, at friends house and pub it took seven days to complete the 382 mile ride. Here are some of the photos and sights seen along the way. Preparations, map links and motivation for ride here.  Great sponsorship and support from friends & family far and near enabled the raising over £2000 being 130% of target.

The route followed the National Cycle network routes 3 -> 4 -> 223 -> Downs link -> 20 ->2 avoiding main roads and mostly on canal paths, recycled railway trails and minor roads. The planned route was loaded to google maps and available on iPhone as the journey progressed. Sustrans cycle maps were also used but the main indicators were the blue and white street signs.

There will be a few photos of doors, archways and historic buildings.

Day 1 - Bideford to Tiverton

Leaving on Monday 08:30 after a chat on Radio Devon about the ride, ready for the first 60 miles. After an easy stretch of Tarka trail to Barnstaple the climb up to Exmoor was tough but gave great countryside views. Dulverton for lunch then the over Bampton downs to overnight stop in Tiverton. Rearranged the bottle carrier during a technical pit stop as they were falling out. Legs / knees all good so far.  Door of the day was seen at Knightheys just outside Tiverton.

Day 2 - Tiverton to Glastonbury

After an overnight in a canal side house the next stage was along the Grand Western canal up to Bridgewater and onwards to Glastonbury. Warrens Bakery home of the Pasty Power-up also staring meringues. Rained on in the last stretch into Glastonbury but had a super warm welcome at the overnight AirB&B.

Day 3 - Glastonbury to Bath

After a very restful stay in Glastonbury with delightful host the next stage was up to Bristol and on to Bath. There was a perilous steep gravelly track down from the back of the Torr on to the levels out to Wells and then very steep Wooky hole hill climb. The urban Whitehead trail leads into centre of Bristol with the 15 mile Bristol and Bath Railway path leading out. The city of Bath being an architectural treasure but nightmare for cars & parking. The impressive Bath Abbey rivalling Wells Palace as the cultural treasure of the day.
