The balcony project got over the finish line before a recent major family event thanks to the extra efforts of the contractors.
An extra big thank you to the contractors and suppliers involved:
- CJ Construction of Bideford Dave, Andy and the team
- WM Ironwork Max, Nick and the team
- PD Electrical Paul and Nick
- Q-Railings
- Philip Hinton Architect
- Envirobuild for the Decking and supports
- Illuminations & Electrics look fabulous especially at dusk.
- Getting it finished on time.
- Lots of light reflected into windows underneath by white roof and lighter pavings slabs
- Using a C shaped RSJ on back wall improved the strength/ease of structure build.
- General site tidiness overnight/weekend.
- Amount of available usable patio space
- Cooperation between contractors, CJ Construction, PD electrician and WM IronWorks.
** Update 4 September 2019
We liked the lighting effect on the balcony rails so much that we got the stairs down to the courtyard done using the same technology. Removed the wooden handrail and put up stainless with light on a PVR. No more tip-toeing down the dark steps to the courtyard.Balcony end of project pictures
Some detailed railing pieces
New Sat dish arriving Friday ! |
Tidy electrical installation of the LED drivers and existing pond electrics |
And finally old and new from same angle.
Design notes
Whilst watching a recent "Homes under the Hammer" we saw a balcony that had been added to a new build house. It does the job but from closer inspection I can see why we made the design decisions we did. 1) Supporting legs covered and set back from corners, 2) Waterproof decking with white board underneath, 3) edge cladding to cover the girders, 3) electric lights just because they look fab.The main bit is the supporting leg - ours are bigger with the covers but being set back from the corner they have less impact.
