There seems to be some confusion about the different types of material used for these clear spiky chair mats. There is mention of three different types of material PVC, polypropylene, and polycarbonate..
I would describe the soft bendy ones, only suitable for short pile carpets, as PVC and the hard shell ones for longer pile carpet as polycarbonate. Not sure where polypropylene fits on this scale.
For the most recent purchase the advert for the mat said it was polycarbonate and yet it is soft bendy and flexible. This is not suitable for an even slightly longer pile carpets. If the plastic mat is too soft then dents appear under the chair and the chair becomes hard to move. For the harder plastic polycarbonate mats, the chair will glide easily over the mat. Eventually, but not inevitably the harder plastic mats, after a couple of years crack, split and become unusable.
There appears to be no description as to what use the three different types of mat material suitable for.
