Balcony Project - Week 8 - Wrap-up - final pictures

The balcony project got over the finish line before a recent major family event thanks to the extra efforts of the contractors.

An extra big thank you to the contractors and suppliers involved:
Unexpectedly great features of the project

  • Illuminations & Electrics look fabulous especially at dusk.
  • Getting it finished on time.
  • Lots of light reflected into windows underneath by white roof and lighter pavings slabs
  • Using a C shaped RSJ on back wall improved the strength/ease of structure build.
  • General site tidiness overnight/weekend.
  • Amount of available usable patio space
  • Cooperation between contractors, CJ Construction, PD electrician and WM IronWorks.

** Update 4 September 2019

We liked the lighting effect on the balcony rails so much that we got the stairs down to the courtyard done using the same technology. Removed the wooden handrail and put up stainless with light on a PVR. No more tip-toeing down the dark steps to the courtyard.

New Sat dish arriving Friday !

Tidy electrical installation of the LED drivers and existing pond electrics

And finally old and new from same angle.

Design notes

Whilst watching a recent "Homes under the Hammer" we saw a balcony that had been added to a new build house. It does the job but from closer inspection I can see why we made the design decisions we did. 1) Supporting legs covered and set back from corners, 2) Waterproof decking with white board underneath, 3) edge cladding to cover the girders, 3) electric lights just because they look fab.
The main bit is the supporting leg - ours are bigger with the covers but being set back from the corner  they have less impact.

Balcony project - Week 7

A big push this week to get the final parts assembled and fitted. The collars round the pillar look very smart now hiding the RSJs pillars. Electrics went in along the handrails.

Onto the last stage now just patio pointing and a bit of snagging, final clean up and jobs done on Monday.

Ta Dah .... Posh photos and final blog entry here.

Balcony project - Week 6

Making big leaps forward this week on. Deck of balcony was GRPed on top and white PVCclad below. 3.5 Tonnes of paving slabs moved from front to back and starting to be laid out.

Next is the finishing off flashing and Balustrade due in tomorrow.

Next
Getting the stair feet sorted.

A couple of the steps went back to the factory for fettling.

Decking inset to steps.

Enough space to spread out the sails of a super yacht.

Top of deck gets final gelcoat.

Decking board on risers complete the floor.

Adding a gravel/drain section for washing down bikes & dogs.

Balcony project - Week 5

Big progress this "week". The steels arrived and were put up in a day. Next day wooden joists went in and electrician started running the wires for the illuminations. Boarding and deck fibre glassing also done.

Next week the Stairs structure is due and the decking gets a gel coat followed by decking boards. The under balcony space will be having paving laid.

Going to rearrange the down pipes from the roof & gutters above the balcony so that we don't need a down pipe in the middle of the decking. The decking will drain down pipes attached to each of the pillars at the front and will be enclosed by a collar.
